Omar Abdullah Says He Won’t Raise J&K’s Internal Issues With US Ambassador Sergio Gor
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Wednesday that he would discuss the situation in the Union Territory with visiting US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, but would not raise its internal political issues with him.
Gor arrived in Srinagar on August 19 for his first official visit to Jammu and Kashmir. The visit is significant as it is the first by a US Ambassador to the region since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
Abdullah: J&K’s Issues Must Be Resolved in India
Speaking ahead of his meeting with Gor, Omar Abdullah said that problems concerning Jammu and Kashmir should be addressed by the Government of India rather than Washington.
He said he did not want to use the meeting as an opportunity to complain about the country's internal matters to a foreign diplomat. Instead, Abdullah said he expected to listen to the ambassador and understand Washington's perspective.
The Chief Minister said he would still discuss Jammu and Kashmir and the current situation in the region during the meeting.
Why Sergio Gor’s Visit Matters
Sergio Gor's visit comes at a time when India-US relations continue to involve discussions on several strategic and regional issues.
During his meeting with Abdullah, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India and said the United States would reconsider its travel advisories for the region.
The ambassador also said the meeting was cordial and that there would be follow-up discussions in Washington and New Delhi.
Focus on Jammu and Kashmir
Abdullah said there are several longstanding issues in Jammu and Kashmir that need to be addressed, but he maintained that their resolution would involve discussions between the J&K government and the Centre.
The Chief Minister expressed hope that engagement between Jammu and Kashmir and the United States would expand in areas where cooperation could benefit the region.
Gor's visit is being closely watched because of its diplomatic significance and the US government's long-standing interest in developments in Jammu and Kashmir.
Key Takeaway
Omar Abdullah's position was clear: he is willing to discuss Jammu and Kashmir with the US Ambassador, but does not intend to seek Washington's intervention in the Union Territory's internal matters. The meeting instead focused on strengthening engagement and exploring areas where the US and Jammu and Kashmir could work together.
