OpenAI Dots: A Deeper Look at ChatGPT's New, Continuous AI Assistants

Chatbots have traditionally felt like digital tennis matches—you type a prompt, it hits back an answer, and the interaction ends until your next turn. However, OpenAI’s latest release, OpenAI Dots, is attempting to break that cycle by introducing what they call "always-on" or persistent personal agents.
Rather than waiting around for your next message, a "Dot" is assigned a broad, continuous responsibility. For instance, you could task it with monitoring your team's customer feedback pipeline, tracking down specific data drops, or handling regular code builds. Powered by the new GPT-6 Astra model, each agent essentially operates within its own dedicated cloud computing environment and web browser. This means it can independently cross-reference information across thousands of connected third-party applications like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Drive without requiring constant human intervention.
While agentic workflows are rolling out rapidly across the tech sector, OpenAI is positioning Dots as deeply integrated assistants that remember your overall ChatGPT history and style preferences. The rollout is starting as an enterprise beta for Pro and Business Premium accounts. It raises a critical question for modern workplaces: how much of our day-to-day workflow are we truly comfortable handing over to an autonomous background process?
